Position Overview
The Data Center Technician, working under the direction of the Critical Infrastructure Lead, is responsible for performing the day-to-day duties involved in maintaining the Data Center facility. The technician is also responsible for the data center’s critical infrastructure such as power, cooling, fire detection, and suppression. Regular, predictable attendance is essential to this position.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with Lockout / Tag out requirements and all applicable safety requirements
- Mechanical responsibilities will include HVAC systems such as roof top units, CRAC units, and humidification systems
- Electrical responsibilities will include electrical/critical power distribution from Utility/Generator main switchgear through the UPS system PDU’s RPP’s out to critical load
- Fire Life Safety responsibilities will include wet sprinkler systems, pre-action systems, FM200 systems, as well as their associated detection devices
- Ensure data center problems are identified and repaired quickly
- Coordinate, supervise, and communicate with contractors to deliver quality services in accordance with RL safety policies and requirements
- Develop creative approaches to improve efficiency and implement new strategies
- Uses computers to document maintenance and PM actions, parts usage in the CMMS
- Communicate effectively, both written and orally, at all levels within the facility
- Operates powered lifting equipment, in support of the maintenance function
- Ability to train others in mechanical, electrical and facility level roles.
- Performs all duties assigned to a Facility Maintenance Worker and other duties as assigned
- Firm understanding and proficiency of the mechanical, electrical, and fire systems used in a data center environment including, but not limited to: electrical distribution and layout, Transformers, PLC’s, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, STS, ATS, PDU, RPP, CRAC, pre-action sprinkler systems, and FM200 systems
- Operates, monitors, maintains, and responds to alarm conditions within data center facilities systems
- Works with the Lead technician to track and complete an aggressive preventive and predictive maintenance program
- Ensure data center operates at maximum efficiency. Analyze existing operating conditions and recommend new technologies and improvements in overall efficiency
- Works with Lead technician to determine maintenance requirements for mechanical, electrical, and fire safety systems
- Proficient understanding of NEC, NFPA70E, and lock out/ tag out requirements
- Hands-on experience installing, maintaining, and/or troubleshooting the following systems including: HVAC, CRAC, Humidification systems, Emergency stand-by Diesel Generators systems, 480/277 and 208/120 electrical distribution, UPS systems, and Double interlock Pre-action systems
- Operate hand and machine tools as well as electrical test equipment
Experience, Skills & Knowledge
- Ability to operate in a rigorous process-driven team environment
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Two (2) years or more of documented related experience and/or technical, mechanical or electrical training.
- Two (2) years in electrical, mechanical or electronic experience in a maintenance work environment
- Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, correspondence and policy instructions
- Ability to use mathematic skills to perform simple calculations in a work environment
- Ability to analyze a variety of systemic problems and based on the analysis, recommend and take proper course of action.
- Ability to learn quickly and address issues as they arise during normal working hours as well as after hours
- Ability to stand for long periods of time, walk long distances, sit, climb, balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Ability to work heights of 40 ft or more, ability to lift and/or move up to 75lbs
- Must have visual acuity, corrected or uncorrected which allows close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
- Must be willing to work on a shift which may require nights, holidays, and some weekends
- Must be willing to respond to afterhours alarm notifications
- CPR/First Aid and NFPA70E certification during employment
