Position Overview

 

The mission of the Ralph Lauren Library is to preserve and protect the Company’s history while providing an essential resource for the Company’s creative endeavors and design excellence.

   

Corporate Historian will lead archival efforts in documenting, preserving, cataloguing and promoting the company’s 50+ year history. The Historian will also leverage the company’s archive and history to work with internal and external partners to engage audiences with the story and heritage of Ralph Lauren.

   

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

1.        Manage, catalogue and build our Corporate Business Records collection that includes corporate memorabilia, internal fact sheets, press releases, and other ephemera, including books. Oversee these physical collections across various archival facilities to ensure proper storage and handling.

 

 

2.        Manage, catalogue and build our editorial content in strong partnership with the Director of Marketing & Advertising Assets and with our press offices worldwide. 

 

 

a.        Capture daily content including online press.

b.        Build dialogue with our press offices to evaluate and describe accurately all editorial.

 

a.        Take ownership of the digital record after check-in, making the item viewable & available to the customer via Ralph Lauren Library Online.

 

d.        Conduct library research to identify and fill gaps in our editorial collection.

e.        Curate and highlight cover stories and key editorial. 

 

 

1.        Lead ongoing effort to expand the collection’s holdings and ensure that assets, which are created by the year’s top corporate initiatives/events, are collected and linked. Demonstrate strong project management skills to be sure that the TOTAL is proactively researched, gathered, digitized, catalogued and arranged.

 

 

a.        Work closely with the Library team to establish acquisition, preservation, and arrangement processes of  incoming historical materials for the archive.

b.        Determine metadata and taxonomy and work flow for upcoming archival projects.

c.        Identify and propose archival projects to ensure history is being preserved, maintained, and easily accessible for company use.

2.        Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the collection as it relates to the broader history of the life and work of Ralph Lauren and the company that he founded. Collaborate with Director of Rare & Historical Collection and Director of  Marketing & Advertising Assets to promote the company’s history through storytelling in partnerships with internal departments as well as potential external partners in exhibitions, publishing projects, and new media.

 

a.        Provide content research and content creation for our internal departments including but not limited to global innovation, employee communications, marketing, public relations, design, and legal.

b.        Lead or assist special projects with our external partners, which includes but not limited to research, fact-checking, and providing clear and concise point of view on the company’s history.

c.        Demonstrate strong ability to lead and manage many ongoing projects happening concurrently.

 

  

 

1.        Manage and build several internal RL Library documents, including the Corporate Timeline and RL Quotes.

 

a.        Pull and capture notable quotes by and about Ralph Lauren found in editorial, social media and advertising on a weekly basis.

b.        Ensure that the timeline is fully comprehensive, properly researched,

fact-checked and distributed to key stakeholders

c.        Lead ongoing vetting process by partnering with high-level executives in design, philanthropy, and legal departments.

d.        Add important milestones to the timeline displayed on our corporate intranet, RL Today.

 

Respond to all questions and inquiries regarding Ralph Lauren’s history from internal departments.

Experience, Skills & Knowledge

Demonstrate an interest in collections management

Knowledge of Twentieth century American Fashion history 

General knowledge or interest in American and New York specific history 

Working knowledge of library database, taxonomy, and metadata 

Photoshop, InDesign, and excel proficiency a plus 

Strong writing and editing skills 

Customer service sensibility 

Resourceful and proactive
